Pressure testing & isolation
Before any instrument goes near the ground, a structured pressure test answers the first question: which system is actually leaking? Gauging the cold service, the hot service and individual branches one at a time, with every fixture closed, shows which section fails to hold and roughly how fast it is losing.
Scope
What this covers
Static gauge tests on cold and heated water systems separately
Sectional isolation at valves to halve the search area repeatedly
Water meter dial observations under controlled conditions
A written summary of which sections held and which dropped
Timing
When it's needed
The right starting point for an unexplained high bill, a meter creeping overnight, or a hot water unit that seems to empty faster than it should. Sectional results decide whether acoustic, thermal or tracer methods follow, and exactly where they should concentrate.
If escaping water reaches switchboards, power points or light fittings, keep people clear and isolate power at the main switch only if it is safe to reach. Shut water off at the meter stop tap, and treat any sagging, water-laden ceiling as a collapse risk rather than something to prod.
Quote variables
What shapes the scope
Number of isolation points the property's existing valving allows
Whether hot and cold systems can be tested independently
Meter access and whether Sydney Water fittings are involved
Multi-unit sites, where common and private pipework interleave
In NSW, repairs to water services and sanitary plumbing must be performed by the holder of a plumbing licence or certificate issued through NSW Fair Trading. Detection surveys inform that work rather than replace it: check the licence of whoever carries out the repair, and note that Sydney Water requirements apply to anything at or near the meter connection.
