Wet-area diagnostics
Shower & wet-area diagnosis
A damp patch beside a bathroom has two very different explanations: a pipe defect, or failed waterproofing letting shower water past the membrane. The repair paths, and their costs: differ enormously, so a wet-area diagnosis runs controlled tests to attribute the water before anyone quotes anything.
Scope
What this covers
Flood testing the shower base with the drain sealed
Isolated spray testing of walls, screens and niches
Dye testing to distinguish waste-water paths from supply leaks
Moisture readings tracked across the test sequence
Timing
When it's needed
Ordered when a ceiling below a bathroom stains, tiles drum or lift, or an ensuite wall stays damp between uses. Especially useful in apartments, where membrane failures are common and responsibility can hinge on precisely what failed.
If escaping water reaches switchboards, power points or light fittings, keep people clear and isolate power at the main switch only if it is safe to reach. Shut water off at the meter stop tap, and treat any sagging, water-laden ceiling as a collapse risk rather than something to prod.
Quote variables
What shapes the scope
Whether the area can be kept dry long enough for staged testing
Access to the ceiling or cavity beneath the wet area
Age and visible condition of grout, seals and the membrane
Documentation needs where strata or building managers are involved
In NSW, repairs to water services and sanitary plumbing must be performed by the holder of a plumbing licence or certificate issued through NSW Fair Trading. Detection surveys inform that work rather than replace it: check the licence of whoever carries out the repair, and note that Sydney Water requirements apply to anything at or near the meter connection.
