Hydrogen trace testing

Tracer gas surveys

Where a line can be drained down, or acoustic results stay ambiguous, tracer gas gives a second and independent read. A five percent hydrogen in nitrogen mix is introduced into the isolated pipe; the molecule is small enough to escape through the defect, rise through soil, tile beds or concrete, and register on a sensitive detector held directly above the failure.

Scope

What this covers

  • Isolation and charging of the suspect line with the trace mixture

  • Surface sweeps with a hydrogen-sensitive probe

  • Cross-checking probe peaks against the plotted pipe route

  • Venting and recommissioning the line once the survey ends

Timing

When it's needed

Tracer gas earns its place on plastic pipework that transmits little sound, on deep or well-insulated runs, and on intermittent weeps too faint for microphones. It is also the standard way to verify a suspected point before a slab gets cut.

If escaping water reaches switchboards, power points or light fittings, keep people clear and isolate power at the main switch only if it is safe to reach. Shut water off at the meter stop tap, and treat any sagging, water-laden ceiling as a collapse risk rather than something to prod.

Quote variables

What shapes the scope

In NSW, repairs to water services and sanitary plumbing must be performed by the holder of a plumbing licence or certificate issued through NSW Fair Trading. Detection surveys inform that work rather than replace it: check the licence of whoever carries out the repair, and note that Sydney Water requirements apply to anything at or near the meter connection.
